The Mount Benson wine region is a relatively new, but expanding wine
region, situated between the coastal towns of Robe and Kingston in the
Limestone Coast region of South Australia. To the north of Kingston
is the Coorong National Park which is well known for its birdlife and
coastal scenery.

The road south of Mount Benson leads to Robe, Beachport, Mount
Gambier and then to Victoria and the Great Ocean Road.
The first commercial planting of vines in Mount Benson were in
1989 with local retired fisherman Bill Wehl and his wife Margaret
paving the way for future growth.
With increasing confidence vineyard plantings in the area continue
to grow with plantings now exceeding 500 hectares and over 2000
tonnes processed by the local wineries.

The Mount Benson wine region is becoming renowned for its cool
climate Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines as well as high quality
white wines with some excellent Sauvignon Blanc being produced.
The terra rossa soils (red sandy loam over limestone) provide
the ideal soil conditions for the growth of the vine and the temperate
climate, which is moderated by the influence of the Great Southern
Ocean, provide excellent conditions for vineyards to thrive and
produce high quality wines.

Adding to the viticulture potential of the Mount Benson wine region
is the plentiful supplies of fresh subterranean water which filters
through the limestone. There is now a reasonably sized wine industry
in Mount Benson with
seven cellar door sales facilities which make for a great afternoons
worth of wine tasting. There are also plenty of scenic points of interest
and great food to accompany it in the surrounding towns.
